Baby swimming is a very different thing depending
on the country, the town and the swim school. Therefore you
need to inform yourself about the alternatives and decide
which school suits you best.
Baby swimming In Sweden involves one or two parents swimming
together with a baby in a warm indoor pool (32-35 degrees
Celsius) under the instruction of a well educated teacher.
The lessons take 30 min. The child is from 3 months of age
up to 2 years.
In the water you can move in a way that is not possible on
land. A baby can move in the water much earlier than it can
on land.
If the lessons are set up in the right way, baby swimming
can stimulate the attachment process between the parent and
the child.
Swimming regularly with your child will get it used to the
water environment. When taking lessons in a professional swim
school you will also give your child the opportunity to acquire
water safety skills. A child also needs to learn respect for
water in a gentle way. Teaching the child how to hold its
breath under the water gives it an important water safety
skill.
It is very important not to rush things. Take your time and
let the curiosity of the child set the pace. It’s also
very important that the parent feel secure in the water environment.
The parent’s feelings transfer very easily to the child.
Therefore you should never do anything with your child that
doesn’t feel good for you.
