Of
course you want to swim together outdoors in the summer. But,
it is important to remember that small children can’t
tell you when they feel cold. A little child also has difficulties
maintaining body temperature.
In Sweden, The Health Department recommends that you do not
take children under two years of age into water lower than
32 degrees Celsius. But this depends very much on the air
temperature, the age of the child, the amount of body fat
and the time spent in the water. If the air is very hot it
is important to keep body temperature down and a short swim
in cooler water can be beneficial. In many countries with
a hot climate it is good to swim. But, be aware of how your
child feels!
If you are swimming on a sunny day you must think about protecting
your child from the sun.
In indoor pools the water is normally between 26 and 29 degrees
Celsius. In Baby Swim pools it must be kept to a minimum of
32 degrees. When swimming with a child under two years of
age in a regular indoor pool you also must be aware of any
signs that the child feels cold.
Never leave your child unattended even if it is very used
to the water environment. A child can never be water proof!
